Do you need to tip your wedding photographer? The expert weighs in

Tipping culture can be really confusing, especially since advice from one culture doesn’t always translate to another. So just what should you do about tipping your Boston wedding photographer?

In most cases, you are not expected to tip your wedding photographer in New England. Regardless of if they own the business, are under a contract with a studio, or if they’re an assistant, wages are set without an expectation that more money will be forthcoming. With that said, sometimes people are inclined to be generous on their wedding day or want to reward someone for going above and beyond, so what should you tip in that case?

As a wedding photographer I would recommend a tip between $50 and $300 depending on the length of the day and the price of the package (you can go lower for assistants and second photographers) rather than a percentage. If you are dealing with someone like me, an independent photographer just making their way through a great big world, then glowing reviews and referrals are going to be worth way more than a tip. Though you can always do both, I am never going to tell you that you can’t give me more money.
