Take off on an adventure with Ryan Richardson Photography with a destination engagement session. Whether you want to experience the life of a globe-trotting supermodel or just want to revisit a favorite spot for all the old sentimental reasons - destination engagement sessions are a unique option to let you get outside the box.

A destination engagement session can be a wonderful surprise for a special vacation, and it can help you to create some unique and lasting memories. Destination sessions are typically full-day events where there’s more time to get situated and explore the available space (and frankly make the most out of the travel costs). It also provides you all the benefits of a regular engagement session, breaking the ice with your photographer and getting a crash course in what working with them will be like on your wedding day.

How do you make your destination engagement session successful?

Do your research! One downside of destination engagements is that your photographer won’t have a lot of good location suggestions in their back pockets, so you’re going to do a lot more of the planning and preparations. Thankfully the internet offers some great options - see what local photographers are shooting! Search for the name of your destination and “engagements” or other popular hashtags on Instagram and let the inspiration flow in. You also want to be sure that you’re not just getting photos you could take in your proverbial backyard.

Lean into your theme. If you’re going to fly across the world for some photos, be inspired by your destination for your wardrobe and approach. Don’t be afraid to indulge in local traditions and attractions and get a little cliché with it. Sure there are a thousand pictures of couples kissing in front of the Eiffel Tower, but it’s a lot more meaningful when it’s a picture of you.

Double check your wardrobe. You’ll want to dress for style and comfort. Destination sessions tend to be a lot more far-ranging than standard engagement sessions so you’ll want to make sure you’re in an outfit you can comfortably put some miles on. You’ll also want to make sure you’re prepared for the weather since June in Boston is going to be a lot different than June in Sydney. Comfortable shoes are important, unless those red bottoms are really meaningful to you, I don’t tend to go for the Quentin Tarintino school of cinematography.

Enjoy your trip! While I fully support the idea of crossing the globe purely for the flex on Instagram, it’s much better to take the time to enjoy yourself instead of limiting yourself to the whirlwind tour you can make with your photographer. Get some excursions for the two of you to have fun together, soak in the culture and local flavor.
