Sometimes you have a very strong idea for your drip, other times you’re far adrift. This session was at Searles’ Castle in New Hampshire with your favorite Boston Wedding Photographer.
It is a question that has plagued scholars and poets for countless centuries - just what should I wear for my Boston engagement photography session? Thanks to years in the wedding industry, Ryan Richardson Photography has come to the rescue with a few rules of thumb to help guide you through this trying decision.
Don’t Match, Complement - Whenever two or more people are going to be in front of a camera, there’s a certain urge that they should be wearing matching outfits. This urge should be fought tooth and nail. You don’t both need to wear blue shirts to show that you belong together because your posing and chemistry will show that. Instead try colors and prints that complement one another or create an interesting juxtaposition.
Think About the Environment - Is it going to be cold during your shoot? Then maybe crop tops and jorts aren’t the way to go. Are you going to be doing a lot of walking? Consider wearing comfortable shoes rather than six inch platform boots. When in doubt, choose articles of clothing that you’re going to be comfortable moving around in.
Suit Up - If you can’t think of anything else, it’s very hard to be overdressed for your engagement photo shoot. Look sharp in a suit or elegant in a big, flowing dress and live out all of your best Project Runway dreams.
Colors for Cowards - Not everyone has a killer sense of fashion or is comfortable just walking through life as a riot of color. If you’re not sure about a particular theme or mood, then pastels, earth tones, and other neutral colors are a great base palette. You can also add in a pop of color with a fun accessory if you want to mix things up.
Consider a Change - Not all engagement shoots lend themselves to multiple outfits but if you’re planning on working in a smaller area or just couldn’t pick one then bring along a second outfit that’s dramatically different. If you went formal first, then go casual. If you started out a little bit country then you can lean right in to rock and roll. Just make sure there’s somewhere to change on your route unless you’re really adventurous.
