How many photos do you deliver from a wedding?
It’s usually one of the first questions I’m asked when I talk to a couple planning their Boston wedding. It’s one of the top questions recommended by blogs and wedding planning experts, and while it’s not a bad question, it’s one that doesn’t have a correct answer because there are so many different approaches to wedding photography and so many different weddings. Some photographers will hand you 4,000 images on a thumb drive and others will carefully edit and curate down to a handful of the best and most beautiful beats from your wedding day. What’s right depends on what’s right for you as a couple - balancing off polish, variety, and comprehensiveness.
When I’m asked, I generally give a figure around 50 images per hour of coverage over a wedding day. Some periods are just more eventful (like getting ready and during the ceremony) than others (dinner) and often you have to create your own moments (when it’s time for the portraits). After more than a decade in the business, I’ve found this is a good balance of telling the story of the wedding day, providing variety, while not overwhelming the couple with a lot of very similar images that can start to be tough to go through no matter how much you loved your wedding day.
